High School Health Science Day a Success!

Posted March 02, 2010

Today on the Downers Grove campus, we held the annual Health Sciences Day for High Schools. This event is a community outreach program where we provide hands-on workshops in osteopathic medicine, pharmacy, physician assistant studies, physical therapy, occupational therapy, biomedical sciences, and clinical psychology; all the programs offered on the Downers Grove, Illinois campus.

This day unlike previous years began without a snowstorm, so it was straight to business at 9:00 AM.

Dean Malone, Vice President of Business Services, welcomed the high schools of Plainfield South, Rolling Meadows, William Fremd, and Regina-Dominican. Just under 100 students particpated in the program and walked away with a better understanding of the health care professional opportunities available to them aside from medicine or pharmacy.

One of the most favorite sessions according to the evaluation forms completed by the students at the end of the day, was the session on Occupational Therapy. I remember, prior to working at Midwestern University, I had no clue what the field of Occupational Therapy was or what they even did. The students learned about the professionals that work with individuals of all ages and diagnoses to help them do the things they want and need to do in their daily lives.

And that is what this program is all about. See ya next year!
