Summertime and the Livin' Isn't that Easy

      Posted August 31, 2010

And just like that, the summer is over. I'm sitting at my desk wearing my last casual Monday outfit of the summer wondering what happened to the last three months. Education is supposed to be one of those great industries where the summer months pass by slowly and quietly just waiting for fall to get energized again. Not at Midwestern University.

Our summer starts off with multiple commencement ceremonies at both campuses. Along with the pomp and circumstance we get the tears and nostalgia as students we know and worked with take off for the next phase in their education and their lives.

No sooner have we thrown away the tissues than we have our first set of new students. Several of our programs have a summer start and we are there to greet them during student orientation. I love the energy of the incoming students. They are anxious and excited and overwhelmed with all the information we throw at them. These new students get settled in, we take a deep breath and it's August with more orientations and another commencement.

On the Glendale campus we also spent the summer touting our great new Dental Institute which opened in May and preparing for the September opening of our new Eye Institute. On the Downers Grove campus we are preparing to recruit for the new College of Dental Medicine-Illinois which will matriculate its first class in 2011.

I guess there's no beach time this summer. Which is OK-I'd hate to miss all the fun here.
