Meeting Alumni in Michigan, San Diego, or Wherever They Gather

Posted May 28, 2009

One of the favorite aspects of my job is getting to meet our alumni. MWU has at least 9,000 alumni now from both our campuses who are living throughout the country. Their success is our most important "bragging point," and they truly do make us all very proud.

This month, I went to Detroit for the Michigan Osteopathic Association annual conference, where we hosted a reception for our CCOM and AZCOM alumni. Michigan is a great state for D.O.s, and we always have a wonderful turnout at this event. The last two Presidents of the CCOM Alumni Association are also Michigan residents, so it was fun to have dinner with Dr. Pamela Georgeson '83 and Dr. Bruce Wolf '94 the evening before, along with Barb Wysocki, MWU's Director of Development & Alumni Relations. Additionally, CCOM Dean Karen Nichols, D.O., attended and gave the alumni an update about our students and our clinical rotations. The alumni are always interested to learn where our students are training and how many more opportunities they now have in the Chicagoland area.

Just this week, I was off to beautiful San Diego for the American Association of Physician Assistants annual conference. Our Downers Grove PA Program has now graduated 15 classes, while our Glendale PA Program has had 10 classes of alumni. Many of these students remember when they were the "newest" and "smallest" programs on campus. Today, however, they are well-established and have earned a national reputation for excellence because of the successes of our alumni. Program Directors Allyson Smith (IL) and Kevin Lohenry (AZ) welcomed the guests and announced that both programs achieved 100% pass rates on their national certification exams this past year! While the campuses have friendly rivalries, clearly the 125+ alumni who attended the reception were happy to meet and network with their fellow alumni from Downers Grove and Glendale.

Yes, the "chardonnay and shrimp" tour of alumni receptions often means lots of travel and lots of hotels around the country, but it truly is fun to get to see our alumni now in practice and to know that they want to remain connected to their alma mater. They are Midwestern University's most important ambassadors, and we are truly so proud of all they have accomplished.
