MWU Admissions By the Numbers

Posted August 04, 2010

Admissions at MWU is competitive. And we have the numbers to prove it.

During this past application cycle for 2010 enrollment (through July 30), our Downers Grove Campus received 9,975 applications for eight programs, from which only 633 seats were available. On our Glendale Campus, we received 8,526 applications for 13 programs, with 918 seats available.

So, in total, 18,501 students applied to one of Midwestern University's 21 degree programs and for one of 1,551 seats that were available. Of all of our applicants, only 8.38% will be successful in matriculating at our University.

What do all of these numbers mean? For those who were successful in the process and are now or will soon be students at MWU, you can be very proud of what you have accomplished. From our perspective, you are the cream of the crop...the best of the best. We had high expectations of you during the application process, and we will have even higher expectations of you as students. With hard work and dedication, we are confident that you will make us proud when you walk across the stage at your graduation ceremony.

For those applicants who did not matriculate at MWU, we know many of you have now enrolled in other universities. Admissions is often about the "best fit," and we know there are many options for health education. We certainly wish you great success in your academic and professional careers.

For others who were unsuccessful, we encourage you to spend the next year strengthening your application to reapply. You may need to retake some prereq courses to meet our minimum requirements. You can enroll in a graduate level biomedical sciences program (MWU has programs at both campuses) where you can improve your credentials and your GPA. You might need to retake an entrance examination. You may consider gaining more healthcare experience through paid or volunteer work. Some of you may need to look at other career options. You can always make an appointment with an MWU admissions counselor for advice if you plan to reapply.

For the general public, I think these numbers reflect the quality of our academic programs and of our University. We have many people applying to join our community as students, and we have the challenge of selecting the most qualified candidates from many excellent ones. Our programs are in demand, and we know by many of the outcomes measures we constantly monitor (graduation rates, board pass rates, postgraduate placements, etc) that our alumni are very successful.

Numbers often tell a story. We are proud of our numbers at MWU, but we are even more proud of the applicants and the students that those numbers represent. As this admissions cycle comes to a close and the next one begins, these numbers reflect our competitiveness as a University. I personally am proud of them, and am proud to serve all the staff in my Offices of Admission who work so hard processing all of these applications and serving all of our applicants so well. Here's to another great year in 2010-2011!
