Last evening, we hosted a special reception and tour for CCOM alumni at the Body Worlds II Exhibit at Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry. The show was great, but my favorite part was the drive home via Lakeshore Drive.
About 80 alumni and guests joined us for a reception at the museum, which was hosted by the Office of Development & Alumni Relations staff, myself, and CCOM Dean Karen Nichols, D.O. After enjoying refreshments and mingling with friends and colleagues, the group was able to tour the Body Worlds exhibit, which features plastinated human bodies. I confess I did not read all the detail about the plastination process, but suffice it to say, that real human skeletons, muscles, and vessels were on display. The exhibit features creative poses of these plastinated figures, including swinging a baseball bat, skiing, and doing gymnastics. My favorite piece in the show was a adult and baby camel. It was huge! The camel's head was actually "sliced" into thirds, so you could see various views inside its neck, mouth, and brain. As a nonmedical person, I enjoyed this unique glimpse into the structure of the human body. I know our alumni were able to appreciate it on a much more meaningful level, as the human body is literally their workplace.
If Body Worlds comes to a town near you, I encourage you to go see it. Right now it's in Chicago and Phoenix, coincidentally for MWU! We are hosting our Glendale Alumni at the Arizona Science Center later this month. Another exhibit is also in Las Vegas; others may be "touring" around the country. If you get a chance, go see it.
The real bonus to me in having last night's event on the south side of Chicago was that I was able to drive home via Lakeshore Drive from the south heading north. This is truly my favorite view of Chicago. On the right, the lake was glistening under the night sky, and on the left, you get to see the wonderful architectural masterpieces of the city lit up and beautiful. From the Sears Tower to the Amoco Building to Lake Pointe Towers, it literally takes my breath away. Winding around past Navy Pier, you get a glimpse of the North Michigan Avenue shopping district, The Drake Hotel, and then the mansions dotting the Gold Coast. I love Chicago, and I will never get tired of driving that route on Lakeshore Drive.
Have a great weekend.
