Glendale Campus Hosts Cuts for Kids 2009

Posted March 27, 2009

For 10 years, MWU's Glendale Campus has been hosting a special event designed to help kids with cancer. The annual Cuts for Kids event allows students and others from the community to get a free haircut and donate their hair to Locks of Love, which in turn makes wigs for children with medical hair loss.

This year's event was extra special for several reasons. The founder of the event, Julie (Julz) Mills, AZCOM Class of 2002, was invited back to campus to join in the 10th anniversary celebration. She joined with MWU President & CEO Kathleen H. Goeppinger, Ph.D., and Dean of Students Ross Kosinski, Ph.D., to participate in the festivities held on March 16.

This year's event was also special because of the efforts of student organizer Matthew Goldenberg, AZCOM Class of 2011. Matthew worked to invite several local groups to participate, including radio personalities Rebecca Thomas and Jenn Burgess, the Arizona Cardinals cheerleaders, and the Arizona Diamondbacks' Baxter the Bobcat. He also created a video to promote the event, while coordinating all other event logistics and marketing.

The results? A total of 157 ponytails were collected, tallying over 1,700 inches of hair. The event also raised more than $4,000 for the Emily Center at Phoenix Children's Hospital.

Congratulations to Julz, for being the founder of such a meaningful and wonderful event; to Matthew and the student volunteers, for hosting such a fun and successful Cuts for Kids this year; and to all of our participants, for their willingness to donate their hair to children in need.
