Midwestern University has been named to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction for 2007. This awards program recognizes colleges and universities "for extraordinary contributions to service in their communities."
At both of our campuses, MWU prides itself on being a strong partner in the communities we serve. Our students go well "above and beyond" when it comes to community service projects. As future health care providers, our students understand the value of volunteering and serving others. They coordinate health fairs in underserved neighborhoods; spend time at homeless shelters and inner-city clinics; organize fundraisers for public service agencies; conduct high school physicals and give presentations on health care topics at local schools; and the list goes on. Our faculty and staff are also active in the community, whether it is serving on local nonprofit boards or judging middle school science fairs or providing free health lectures for the community. We also host many service events on our campuses, from the St. Jude's race in Downers Grove to the Cuts for Kids event in Glendale.
MWU doesn't value community service in order to get recognized. Rather, we value community service because it is central to our mission of educating future health care providers. It is something that is embraced on both of our campuses from the president to the deans to the faculty to the administrative staff to the students. And we're very proud of it.
MWU was one of 528 schools nationwide to receive this prestigious honor, which is sponsored by the Corporation for National & Community Service in conjunction with the Department of Education, Department of Housing and Urban Development, USA Freedom Corps, Campus Compact, and the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation. We are honored to receive this award and pledge to work hard to earn it again next year.
