A Bigger Breakfast

Posted November 18, 2011

Midwestern University's annual Thanksgiving Breakfast was held on Wednesday, November 16, and once again the faculty and staff of the Glendale Campus came together to enjoy some good food and great raffle prizes presented by the University's admin team.

This year's breakfast was a bit different than last year's, though.

Last year's event was actually my first "big event" here at the University. I had been hired at the end of October and it was my first opportunity to help put on a campus-wide gathering with our department. Ever since then, the Thanksgiving Breakfast has stuck in my mind as a sort of mile marker on my mental highway.

The things I noticed immediately about this year's breakfast:

  1. After a year of helping set up and host many different Midwestern events here in Glendale, the setup for the Thanksgiving Breakfast seemed a lot easier than I remembered from last year.
  2. Holy cow, how many people did we hire over the past year???

It's true - even though the Barrel II Cafeteria had been totally remodeled to be more spacious and accommodating for events like these, we definitely had less elbow room than last year. We had room for many more tables than last year because of the remodel, but we eventually had to pull out two additional long tables to seat all of the attendees.

I have to give serious props to Janet Reiman, our Special Events Coordinator, the maintenance crew, and the University administration team for their dedication and patience in putting on this event. I hope the admin team were wearing their Virgin HealthMiles pedometers, because they certainly got their day's worth of steps in when they distributed the raffle gifts!

The sheer number of University employees that attended on Wednesday was thrilling to see. The growth on our campus has been electrifying, more so considering the difficult economy. As Dr. G said, it certainly is something worthy of our gratitude as we approach the Thanksgiving holiday.

Have a happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
