Arizona Summer Medical Program Opportunities for High School Students

Program: Forensics: The Science Detectives

Description: Students will be presented with the fields of Crime Scene Investigation and Forensic Science and career opportunities within these fields. Participants will visit a mock crime scene, collect and process evidence, conduct DNA testing, and learn from professionals in this field.

Program: High School Student Research Volunteer Program

Description: The High School Student Volunteer Program is an on-going program that allows highly motivated high school students to participate in scientific research.
Student Selection: In the fall of each academic year, a letter is sent to the Chair of the Biology Department, Advanced Placement or Honors Biology Teacher, as well as the Principal of each Phoenix area high school, requesting that two students be nominated from the school. Teachers are to select a maximum of two students from their school who they feel are highly motivated and would benefit from this laboratory experience.

Eligibility:
• Students must have completed their freshman year in high school
• Be available to work a minimum of 2 - 3 hours per day at least two
weekdays per week during the school year and full days during the
summer (summer times are determined by the individual mentor)
• Maintain grades at school while participating in the program
• Participate in the summer student research presentation day

Program: The Hoop of Learning Medical Professions Internship Program

Description: This program is designed to build a high school to college bridge and foster educational resilience and career development among Native students. Hoop will recruit Native American high school juniors and seniors. Students will take college credit health classes at a Community College in the morning and participate in an internship at the Phoenix Indian Medical Center in the afternoon. Students will participate in a paid internship program at the Phoenix Indian Medical Center. Students will be involved in hospital activities and the actual care of patients in three areas: dental, surgery and mental health.

Program: Summer Institute on Medical Ignorance

Description: Seven week paid summer research program in which students work full- time in various medical laboratories and clinics at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center, doing research on such subjects as cardiovascular disease, genetics, cancer, neuroscience and preventive medicine. Attendance at seminars is mandatory.

Program: Nurse Camp
Dates: Not offered again until 2011
Description: Mayo Clinic Arizona has offered the Nurse Camp program (Nurse Camp and Nurse Camp for Adults) annually since 2003 for students to learn about nursing as a career option. In 2009 and 2010, Mayo Clinic is updating various systems and will suspend the Nurse Camp programs until 2011. The Nurse Camp Web site will be updated with the 2011 program information and application process by February 2011 for the Nurse Camp program and by July 2011 for the Nurse Camp for Adults program.
