The Midwestern University Master of Arts in Biomedical Science (M.A.) degree is a full-time, three quarter, graduate level, coursework only program designed to help students with a bachelor's degree (preferably with a major in the sciences) improve their academic foundation in the biomedical sciences and augment their credentials for admission into a professional program (i.e. medical, dental, podiatry, pharmacy school, or other health professional program). All students take a minimum of 45 quarter hour credits in the basic sciences and medical ethics and complete a Capstone Course. The Capstone Course includes an introduction to preparation of a scholarly, literature-based thesis on a topic of the student's choice (usually a disease condition) and a presentation of this topic in a seminar format. In addition, students are required to take enough elective credits each quarter to bring the total quarter credits to 15. The elective credits, offered in a variety of disciplines, include other biomedical science courses and professional preparation courses (e.g. MCAT or PCAT Preparation, Health Career Planning, Medical Terminology, Learning Styles and Assessment, etc.). These electives improve critical thinking skills and study skills and enhance students' preparation for professional school application.
A premium is placed on interdisciplinary education and integrating all aspects of the health care continuum. Therefore, students from all disciplines of health care (physicians, physician assistants, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, pharmacists, dentists, researchers, etc) study together with health care administrators, lawyers, social workers, clergy, and other interested individuals. Individual courses in the Biomedical Sciences Program may be taken as a non-degree candidate to either sample the curriculum or learn about a specific topic. Courses may be audited or taken for credit as a non-degree student on a space-available basis.
The Biomedical Sciences Program offers opportunities for training at all levels of the "health care continuum" — in the laboratory, classroom, and clinic — through a dynamic learning experience that fosters disciplined thinking and self-directed learning. The courses of study provide the academic foundation on which to make discoveries in the laboratory, sound ethical decisions in the clinic, and effective teachers in the classroom as they train future health care professionals.
NOTE: Transferring between degree programs is prohibited. M.B.S. students who leave after their first year will not be granted an M.A. degree. M.A. students who do not get accepted into a professional program after the first year cannot "stay on" for a second year and get the M.B.S. degree.
The mission of the Master of Arts in Biomedical Science Program is to help students with a bachelor's degree in the sciences to improve their academic foundation in the biomedical sciences and to graduate students who are competitive applicants for admission into professional programs in health care.
