The Hematology Oncology Fellowship of Midwestern University Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine is an AOA approved three year combined subspecialty training program which provides fellows with:

• A properly organized program with progressively more responsibility in the care of the patient with hematologic disorders of a non-malignant and malignant nature, as well as malignant solid tumor disease.
• Adequate training to enable the fellow to provide definitive diagnosis and institute appropriate treatment for patients with hematologic and neoplastic diseases, and demonstrate the application of osteopathic principles and practice as it relates to hematology/oncology.
• Adequate training to become board eligible for the hematology oncology certifying examinations given by the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine.

Program Content

Fellows complete a minimum of 30 months of training in clinical hematology and oncology, rotating with several busy hematologists and oncologists on staff at the base institutions. Approximately 50% of consultations for the inpatient service are for oncologic cases and the remainder are for hematologic issues.

Additional training is provided through the following rotations:

• Bone Marrow Transplantation-St. Francis Hospital;Beech Grove, IN
• Blood Bank/Pathology-John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County; Chicago, IL
• Palliative Medicine
• Coagulation Medicine

Expected Outcomes

The Fellows receive a comprehensive structured cognitive, technical and procedural clinical education in both inpatient and outpatient settings that will enable them to become competent, proficient and professional osteopathic hematologists/oncologists.
