Osteopathic Medicine in Downers Grove

The Urological Surgery Residency Training Program of Midwestern University/Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine is an AOA-approved five year training program. Our graduating residents will have a comprehensive understanding of human biology as it pertains to diseases in which urological surgery plays a role in recovery and the appropriate didactic and technical skills to affect such recovery.

Mission Statement

It is the mission of this Urological Surgery Training Program to provide the resident with progressive learning experiences that develop the attitudes, skills and knowledge of an osteopathic physician to efficiently provide quality surgical and patient care; education, combined with quality patient care, is the first priority of this residency program. This program will provide the requirements for certification in Urological Surgery by the American Osteopathic Association through the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery.

Training Objectives

The curriculum provides objectives that prepare the resident to:

• Manage surgical problems, based on the knowledge of basic and clinical sciences;
• Use critical thinking in making effective decisions for patient management;
• Demonstrate proficiency in the psychomotor skills required of a competent and responsible urological surgeon;
• Teach basic surgical skills to medical students, interns and other residents within the context of the residency program;
• Collaborate effectively and share knowledge with colleagues and allied health professionals;
• Make sound, ethical and legal judgments in the practice of urological surgery;
• Provide cost-effective care to urological surgical patients;
• Educate patients and their families concerning health care needs;
• Read, interpret and participate in clinical research, where appropriate; and
• Participate in community and professional organizations.

Curriculum

The length of the Urological Surgery Residency Training Program is a total of five years. The OGME-1 year follows the standards set by the AOA. The next four years are spent in Urological Surgery with progressively increasing responsibility in patient care and the development of surgical skills.
