Student Services
The mission of the Office of Student Services is to offer a broad
range of services in the arena outside the formal boundaries of
the classroom that support, enhance, nurture, and promote the growth
and development of Midwestern University students by contributing
to their cultural, social, intellectual, physical, and emotional
well- being. It is within the mission of Student Services to promote
awareness, understanding, and acceptance of all individuals in a
diverse world society and to promote a sense of respect, appreciation,
and community between the Colleges that can be carried on throughout
students' professional lives.
The Office of Student Services is located in the Barrel Student
Center on the Glendale campus and coordinates a variety of student
support service functions within the University. The Office of Student
Services supports all Colleges.
Student Services interacts with students to develop and offer support
programs and services that enrich students' experiences on campus.
Examples of these programs include: MWU Student Government, MWU
Student Tutoring Program, student social and recreational activities,
orientation, career guidance and counseling, stress and time management
seminars, multicultural and diversity programming, crisis intervention
and interpersonal counseling, MWU Student Recycling Program, intramural
sports, and other developmental activities. The Office of Student
Services has an open door policy and is available to students on
a continuing basis offering support, advice, and encouragement needed
to meet student concerns and challenges.
Student Counseling
The Dean for Student Services, faculty, staff, and support groups
are the primary initial sources of personal counseling for students.
The Dean for Student Services maintains an open door policy to meet
with students who have questions or problems related to student
life. Midwestern University provides students with a network of
licensed counselors for serious counseling issues of a more personal
nature. Students may seek referral of these counselors through the
Office of Student Services. All issues of this nature remain strictly
confidential.
The Director of Student Financial Services is available to help
students who seek assistance in managing their finances. The Director
of Residence Life and staff members are available to assist students
with issues pertaining to on-campus housing.
Faculty Mentors/Advisors
Each College of the University has a different program design for
its academic support programs that offer faculty mentoring or advising
to its students. Each program is structured to meet the unique needs
of students in the colleges' programs.
MWU Student Tutor Program
Midwestern University offers students' peer-tutoring services through
the Office of Student Services. Tutoring is available during all
academic years and is designed to help enhance test-taking skills,
modify study habits, and/or focus on critical material and content.
Student Health
As deemed appropriate for the protection of students and patients,
Midwestern University requires that all students possess health
insurance and submit documented proof of immunity against certain
diseases during their enrollment.
Americans with Disabilities Act Policy
Midwestern University makes reasonable accommodations to the physical
and mental limitations of students, faculty, and staff to the extent
that such accommodation does not impose an undue hardship on the
conduct of its business. MWU's building planning includes reasonable
accommodation to the special needs of disabled individuals and disabled
veterans, including access to the building, utilization of the restroom
facilities, and mobility requirements within the building and parking
locations.
Sexual Harassment Policy
Midwestern University believes in the dignity and worth of its students,
faculty, and employees and will not tolerate unacceptable conduct
or behavior that has the effect of substantially interfering with
the individual's performance or creates an intimidating, hostile,
or offensive learning/working environment. Members of the MWU community
have a right to be free from sexual harassment. This policy/procedure
establishes a protocol whereby those who believe they have been
sexually harassed may obtain redress promptly and equitably through
the formal and informal procedures of the University.
It is the policy of MWU to provide an environment that is free
from sexual harassment because such conduct seriously undermines
the atmosphere of trust and respect that is essential to a healthy
work and academic environment.
This policy applies to all members of the University community,
each of whom is encouraged to report promptly complaints about sexual
harassment. Anyone found to be in violation of this sexual harassment
policy shall be subject to disciplinary action, which may include,
but is not limited to, written warning, demotion, transfer, suspension,
dismissal, or discharge.
No action shall be taken against anyone who submits a complaint
that he or she believes to be valid, regardless of the outcome of
the investigation. However, anyone found to be intentionally dishonest
in making the allegations or to have made them maliciously is subject
to University discipline.
Sexual harassment may involve the behavior of a person of either
sex against a person of the opposite or same sex, and occurs when
such behavior constitutes unwelcome sexual advances, unwelcome requests
for sexual favors, and other unwelcome verbal or physical behavior
of a sexual nature where:
- Submission to such conduct is made either explicitly or implicitly
a term or condition of an individual's education or employment;
- Submission to or rejection of such conduct by an individual
is used as the basis for academic or employment decisions affecting
the individual's welfare; or
- Such conduct has the purpose or effect of substantially interfering
with an individual's welfare, academic or work performance, or
creates an intimidating, hostile, offensive, or demeaning educational
or work environment.
A third party may also file a complaint under this policy if the
sexual conduct of others in the educational or work environment
has the purpose or effect of substantially interfering with the
third party's welfare, academic, or work performance.
