* Dependent students are not eligible for additional unsubsidized Stafford loan amounts. Instead, the parent or step-parent of a dependent student can borrow a federal PLUS loan. If the parent is unable to obtain a PLUS loan, the dependent student will be eligible for the same additional unsubsidized Stafford loan amounts as an independent undergraduate student. Alternately, a dependent student can apply for a private loan in their own name. Private loan approval is based on a review, by the lender, of the borrower's and/or co-borrower's credit worthiness and ability to repay the loan.
