Greetings
from the Dean
In 1900, in a small building at 405 West Washington Street, Chicago,
the American College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery opened its
doors for the training of osteopathic physicianswith a student
body of four and a faculty of five. Today, this osteopathic medical
institutionnow the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine,
a college of Midwestern Universityaccounts for nearly 13% of
all practicing osteopathic physicians and surgeons in the United States.
For over 100 years, CCOM has raised the standards of osteopathic
medical education and practice. The College has fought gallantly,
often at tremendous odds, to win for itself and the osteopathic
medical profession the right to teach its graduates to practice
medicine on equal terms with all other qualified physicians. The
College continues to maintain the highest academic standards for
preparing its graduates to enter the osteopathic profession.
The College continues to prepare its graduates to practice effectively
in the ever-changing health care delivery system. CCOM's program
combines the necessary underlying scientific principles with the
appropriate psychosocial skills to enable its graduates to practice
both the art and the science of osteopathic medicine. CCOM's rich
heritage and historical emphasis on primary care uniquely prepare
its graduates to practice medicine osteopathically while competing
successfully in today's health care environment.
Welcome to the College and to the osteopathic profession.
