Students who fail two or more courses in a single academic year during DMD-1 and DMD-2, or students who fail two or more courses in a single quarter, usually receive a recommendation for an academic leave of absence or dismissal. During DMD-3 and DMD-4, students that fail one course will usually be given a recommendation for an academic leave of absence or dismissal. Students that fail a course after being granted an academic leave of absence are usually recommended for dismissal.
Matriculation and participation in dental school is a privilege, not a right. Therefore, students can be dismissed for the following reasons:
1. Failure to achieve minimum academic standards (Student Academic Progress Committees, Pre-Clinical and Clinical)
2. Failure to exhibit the personal qualifications and ethical standards necessary to the practice of dentistry (student judicial process)
3. Violation of Midwestern University College of Dental Medicine-Illinois rules and regulations that are grounds for dismissal (student and administrative judicial process)
