The practice of Internal Medicine focuses on the medical care for adults. This can be in the outpatient and/or inpatient environments and may involve both general and subspecialty practice.
The IM Department participates in the student's didactic undergraduate medical education throughout their four years at the college. The first year involves instruction in patient care experiences, including instruction in history and physical examinations. Clinical cases are also introduced by the IM department faculty in collaboration with the physiology department during the first year to facilitate integration of clinical relevance to basic science concepts. Second-year students are given presentations in Cardiology, Pulmonology, Neurology, Rheumatology, and Gastroenterology facilitated through the Introduction to Clinical Medicine (ICM) course. The department faculty members collaborate with the Microbiology Department in using clinical case correlates to demonstrate key principles as they relate to clinical care. Department members participate in the Patient Care Experiences course with direct video monitoring of students, debriefing of their patient encounters, and SOAP note grading. Faculty also provide problem-oriented presentations prior to student participation in disease specific Observed Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE) experiences. The Department of Internal Medicine is responsible for the required core clinical clerkship rotations in internal medicine during the third year in both ward and preceptor based General Internal Medicine, Cardiology, and during the fourth year; Critical Care, and one rotation within a medical subspecialty. The Internal Medicine department is also responsible for fourth year clinical elective rotations in Cardiology, Pulmonology, Gastroenterology, Oncology/Hematology, Rheumatology, Neurology, Allergy/Immunology, Infectious Disease, Nephrology, Endocrinology, and Geriatrics. The department coordinates two general internal medicine and one cardiology clerkships in the third year of undergraduate medical education. Each lasts four weeks and includes twice-monthly small groups where students provide case presentations in Internal Medicine and Cardiology. Students attend the groups in one of three ways: In person, live video conferencing, or asynchronous viewing. Department members interact with students to provide guidance, critique performance, and help students refine skills. Throughout the year, department members meet with third year students to discuss their rotations and review electives available in the fourth year. Internal medicine faculty maintain an open-door policy and are integrally involved in coaching and mentoring students regarding career choices and the residency match process. Department members advise students who have declared an interest in Internal Medicine or any of its subspecialties. Fourth-year students meet with department members for advice regarding audition rotations as well as Internal Medicine residency applications and programs. The department members also serve as advisors to the Internal Medicine and Cardiology clubs. Faculty are involved in assisting students with scholarly activities such as poster presentations and case reports for local and national venues. Students also have opportunities to participate in student programs within the American College of Osteopathic Internist and the American College of Physicians. The Internal Medicine Department members also contribute regularly to interdisciplinary training in the other colleges of Midwestern University, including Podiatry, Optometry, Physical Therapy and the Physician Assistant programs. Members are active participants in the admissions interviews of the Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine and participate as mentors for students at the university-sponsored free clinics.
