John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County

John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County
1901 W. Harrison
Chicago, IL 60612
312-864-6000

Ushering in a new era of quality in public health hospital, the John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County brings the most up-to-date technology and an efficient and contemporary hospital environment to the five million residents of Cook County. Opened in December 2002, the hospital continues the tradition of excellence in health care that led to the former Cook County Hospital's national reputation for its expertise and breadth of services.

The hospital's 1.2 million square feet (the equivalent of 25 football fields) organizes services in a "main street-style" layout that accommodates the needs of patients, physicians, and staff. There are dedicated units for obstetrics and pediatrics (all on the same floor), intensive care, burn treatment, and an enlarged and enhanced emergency room that accommodates its Level 1 Trauma Center. The hospital has full digital technology. All of the patient rooms in the 464-bed hospital are private or semi-private with private bathrooms. Also, for the first time, patients have private televisions and telephones.

The hospital serves as the hub for the most serious and complicated medical services of the Cook County Bureau of Health Services. It also enhances the delivery of specialty and subspecialty care for the entire Bureau network. In fact, more than 40% of the hospital's space is dedicated to an outpatient Specialty Care Center, which is operated by the Bureau's Ambulatory & Community Health Network. The Specialty Care Center registers more than 220,000 patient visits annually.
