For high school students who want a head start on careers in health care, MWU is offering its annual spring Health Sciences Career Day for High School Students and summer Health Careers Institute, both sponsored in partnership this year with Wells Fargo.

The Health Sciences Career Day will take place Thursday, March 3^rd and is designed for high school classes to visit MWU labs, tour the campus, and attend interactive presentations by health care professionals.  Classes will have the opportunity to choose hands-on workshops highlighting careers in osteopathic medicine, optometry, dental medicine, pharmacy, physician assistant studies, occupational therapy, biomedical sciences, bioethics, perfusion, podiatric medicine, clinical psychology, physical therapy, and nurse anesthesia.  To register your class for this FREE program (deadline: February 4^th, 2011), call 623/573-3298, send an email to jreiman@midwestern.edu, or go to www.midwestern.edu/azscienceday to download the flyer.

For students who want to learn about health careers more in depth, MWU will offer its eight-day Health Careers Institute for High School Students this summer from July 7-16.  Each day from 9:00 to 4:00, MWU faculty and advanced students will teach workshops in anatomy, physiology, and introductory skills for various health professions, with a special focus on how to prepare for college and what to expect from each profession.

Guest lectures for this exciting summer program will include current medical topics such as Emergency Medicine, Sports Medicine, Drug Abuse, Healthcare Volunteer Opportunities, and more. In addition, participants will attend a medical field trip to Arrowhead Hospital and an interactive Emergency Medical Services mock rescue scenario presented by the Glendale Fire Department.

Hands-on lab topics, among others, will include:

• A Visit to the Anatomy Lab
• Surgery Basics: Suturing, Gowning, and More
• Vital Signs & Other Physical Exam Skills
• The Heart-Lung Machine & Open-Heart Surgery
• Beyond Medication: The Role of the Pharmacist
• Inside the High-Tech Dental Medicine Lab
• Physical Therapy Skills & Assessment
• Osteopathic Medicine: A Hands-on Approach
• Podiatric Medicine: the Lower Extremities

This FREE program is open to all current high school students with a serious interest in science (must be 16 years or older by July 7th to apply). Forty-eight participants will be selected based on their interest in the health professions, as demonstrated by school coursework, volunteer activities, a teacher recommendation letter, and an application essay.
