AZ: Midwestern University Nurse Anesthesia Program Receives 10-Year Accreditation

November 16, 2011

by Office of Communications

Midwestern University is pleased to announce that the 27-month Master of Science in Nurse Anesthesia (M.S.) program offered at the University's Glendale Campus received notice of accreditation from the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (COA).

Effective October 12, 2011, the program's certificate of accreditation is valid for the maximum accreditation cycle of 10 years with no progress report requirement - a rarity for graduate-level programs of this type. The Nurse Anesthesia program was established at Midwestern University in 2004.

"As a relatively young program, we are especially grateful for the immense support from everyone at Midwestern University," said Shari Burns, CRNA, Ed.D., Program Director, Nurse Anesthesia. "The dedication of the University administration team, our program faculty and alumni, and our clinical preceptors at 29 sites throughout the United States truly made this accomplishment possible."

CRNAs are anesthesia specialists who provide anesthetics to patients in collaboration with surgeons, anesthesiologists, dentists, podiatrists, and other qualified health care professionals. They administer approximately 65% of the 26 million anesthetics given to patients each year in the United States, and are the sole anesthesia providers in more than 65% of rural hospitals in the United States.

The Nurse Anesthesia Program at Midwestern University provides students with a solid foundation in the basic sciences as well as all aspects of anesthesia management. Graduates of the program work as CRNAs in a variety of settings, including urban and rural hospitals, same-day surgery centers, doctors' offices, and pain clinics.
