Osteopathic Medicine in Downers Grove

The Cardiology Fellowship Training Program of the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine is a 36-month, AOA-approved training program leading to board certification in the subspecialty of cardiology by the AOBIM.

The general objectives of the training program are to engender continuous participation in a program of self-evaluation and self-improvement for trainees, provide the trainee with diverse didactic and clinical experiences in all aspects of acute and chronic cardiovascular diagnosis and therapy, and provide the trainee with the knowledge and experience basis for development of the ability to elicit, organize and record data, order, utilize, interpret and (in some cases) perform diagnostic procedures and tests; initiate appropriate therapy with due regard for the risks versus the benefits, and follow and manage patients with all forms of cardiovascular disease.

Mission

The Section of Cardiology and the Department of Internal Medicine educates osteopathic cardiology fellows to provide the highest quality compassionate care; promotes the practice of osteopathic cardiology; and encourages lifelong learning, research, and service.

Curriculum

Core Requirements

• Consultation, CCU, and other non-laboratory clinical practice - 8 months
• Catheterization and invasive procedures - 6 months
• Noninvasive imaging and cardiovascular graphics - 4 months
• Echocardiography - 4 months
• Electrophysiology/Pacemaker/ICD - 2 months
• Elective, including all vacation time - 12 months

• Post-operative Cardiac Care
• CHF Service
• Cardiovascular Research
• Any area of the schedule requirements

Didactic Conferences

• Journal Club: one to two articles from current literature are reviewed and discussed in detail, held weekly
• Catheterization Conference: one to two instructive and interesting catheterization cases are presented and discussed in detail, as well as presentation on a topic of current interest
• Critical Care Conference: one to two articles from current literature are reviewed and discussed in detail, held weekly
• Osteopathic Principles and Practice: monthly meeting and hands on training in OMT
• Internal Medicine Grand Rounds
• Special Lectures and Conferences
• Reading Requirements

Graduates of an AOA-approved college of Osteopathic Medicine who have satisfactorily completed an AOA-approved Internal Medicine Residency may submit the following to apply:
