Midwestern University Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine's Orthopedic Surgery Residency is an AOA approved five year training program designed to provide the resident with advanced and concentrated training in osteopathic orthopedic surgery through both didactic and clinical experiences. At the completion of the program the resident will have obtained the necessary training to qualifiy to sit for the American Osteopathic Board of Orthopedic Surgery certification examination.

Goals 

• Increasing knowledge base to acquire the necessary requisite skills to become a successful practicioner in the area of general orthopedics.
• Development of the technical skills necessary to safely and competently perform surgery in multiple areas of orthopedics.
• Acquiring proficiency in the examination, diagnosis and treatment of orthopedic patients and to develop competency in the diagnosis and management of non-operative orthopedic problems; in both the inpatient and outpatient settings.
• Research and Development-ability to synthesize, formulate and to test hypothesis or treatment, as well as to publish on both a local and national level.
• Instruction of medical students, interns, residents and lecture/presentations to housestaff and attending physicians.

Curriculum

OGME-1: Internal Medicine (one month), ICU (one month), Emergency Medicine (one month), General Orthopedic Surgery (3 months), Sports Medicine or OM (one month), Non-Orthopedic Surgery (2 months) , Female Health (one month), Rheumatology or Radiology-musculoskeletal, MRI, CT, etc (two months)

OGME-2 through 5: Program Content

• Integration of Osteopathic Principles and Practices
• Progressive training based on current orthopedic literature, surgical anatomy, children's orthopedics, tumors of the musculoskeletal system
• Hand reconstruction surgery and disorders within the hand, spine and trauma experience.
• Pediatric orthopedic rotations.
• Adult orthopedics (including spine, fractures, amputations and protheses, reconstructive procedures, pain management, neuro-muscular disease, peripheral vascular problems)
• Attendance at the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics (AOAO) meetings: one spring meeting and one fall meeting
• Presentation of one paper per year to the AOAO
• Orthopedic In-Training Examination annually
• Pathology Course-University of Chicago, once during years 2-5
• Scheduled lectures (Wednesday morning case presentations and x-ray review, Friday morning residents' case presentations, daily x-ray rounds, monthly journal clubs)
