PGY-2 Critical Care Residency

Program Purpose
Midwestern University Chicago College of Pharmacy (CCP) offers a PGY2 residency in critical care with primary practice sites at Rush University Medical Center and Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, IL and Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, IL. By providing required learning experiences at a community health-system and academic medical centers and by building on skills from a PGY1 residency, this program is designed to prepare a highly qualified independent critical care practitioner who will be able to practice in a variety of settings including medical, surgical, neurosurgical and cardiac critical care. Additionally, our graduates will be prepared to successfully assume adjunct clinical faculty or non-tenure track clinical faculty roles.
Required Rotations
To ensure the resident has an excellent knowledge base in patient care, this residency has been designed with the following required critical care clinical rotations:
- Internal Medicine (MICU, academic medical center) – 8 weeks
- Internal Medicine (MICU, community hospital) - 4 weeks
- Surgery (SICU) – 4 weeks
- Cardiology (CCU or CTICU) – 4 weeks
- Neurology / Neurosurgical (NSICU) – 4 weeks
- Infectious Diseases – 4 weeks
Residents will also be required to provide clinical/staffing services at their primary practice site every third weekend (at Northwestern Memorial Hospital) or on-call service approximately twice monthly and clinical/staffing services every third or fourth weekend (at Rush University Medical Center) throughout the residency year.
To individualize the experience for each resident, the director works with the resident to select specific rotations within the required arena. This allows exposure to areas the resident may not have seen in prior experiences and further enhances their knowledge base.
The length of each experience may vary depending on the resident's past experience in each field of study, areas of interest, and target activities. However, a majority of the required rotations are four weeks in duration.
Resident Elective Options
Following the completion of the required rotations, residents may choose focused electives. Examples of four-week elective rotations include:
- Emergency Medicine
- Hematology/Oncology
- Toxicology
- Transplant
The resident and director may create a plan for the remainder of the residency that delves into a specialty area. This may include a variety of practice sites or intensive practice at one or two select locations.
Residency plans will be reviewed quarterly to best fit the program to the interests and goals of the resident. Alterations to plans are expected as the resident's experiences increase.
Residency Requirements
Completion of a major research project is required. The residency project will be coordinated through your primary site preceptor, and it is expected that project will be written up into a manuscript suitable for publication in a professional journal.
Residents will participate in a structured program called the Teaching and Learning Curriculum (TLC) which will provide a teaching certificate at the completion of their residency. As part of the TLC, residents will be given opportunities to lecture, facilitate workshops and precept pharmacy students. Other opportunities include participation in the Pharmacy Management and Leadership Curriculum, Research Curriculum and a variety of other faculty meetings and seminars. All residents are required to provide a formal grand rounds presentation at some point during the year.
Accreditation Status
This residency program is accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP).
Faculty Appointment
Each resident will receive a faculty appointment as a Visiting Instructor in the Midwestern University Chicago College of Pharmacy Department of Pharmacy Practice.
Benefits
The residency includes two weeks of vacation and health care benefits. Memberships in ASHP and AACP are provided. Support is available to attend national and regional/local meetings.
Duration
The 52-week residency begins on July 1 and ends on June 30 of the following year.
Qualifications of the Resident
Applicants must have graduated with the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree, successfully completed or are currently in a PGY1 residency, and be eligible for pharmacist licensure in Illinois. The applicant must be motivated, self-directed, and have excellent communication skills. An interest in teaching is essential.
