Community Pharmacy Residencies

Pharmacy in Downers Grove


Experience pharmaceutical care in innovative community pharmacy settings. Midwestern University Chicago College of Pharmacy (MWU-CCP) is affiliated with two APhA/ASHP-accredited community pharmacy residency programs in Chicago's western suburbs. Our partnerships with Jewel-Osco Pharmacy and Dominick's Pharmacy allow residents opportunities to develop patient care skills in the community pharmacy setting while benefiting from the resources and teaching opportunities provided by MWU-CCP. Our unique emphasis on developing both community pharmacy practice and teaching skills provides residents with numerous career and professional opportunities.

Program Highlights

Duration

Each residency is for 12 consecutive months beginning in July and ending June 30th.

Qualifications of the Resident

Applicants for each program must have graduated with the PharmD degree and be eligible for pharmacist licensure in Illinois at the time they start the residency. Applicants must be motivated, self-directed, and have excellent communication skills. Work experience in community pharmacy, as well as a commitment to pursuing a career in this setting, is desirable.

Salary and Benefits

Each resident will be an employee of their respective community pharmacy and will receive a competitive stipend and benefit package. Each pharmacy will also provide support for attending regional and national professional meetings and conferences.

Faculty Appointment

Each resident will receive a faculty appointment from MWU-CCP as a Visiting Instructor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice. Benefits of the appointment include use of MWU facilities and opportunities to learn and teach with Chicago College of Pharmacy faculty.

Applications and Additional Information

Each affiliated residency program has their own independent process for selecting residents. Since 2007, both programs participate in the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Residency Matching Program. Prospective residents are encouraged to apply for each program separately by contacting those listed below.

Jewel-Osco Community Pharmacy Residency Partnership

SUPERVALU Pharmacies Inc. operates over 160 community pharmacy locations under the Jewel-Osco banner in the Chicagoland market. Two residency positions are available, each maintaining a primary pharmacy affiliation in the western suburbs. This program has had a community pharmacy resident since 2002. Over the course of the residency, the resident will gain the clinical and management skills necessary to provide patient care services and operate a profitable pharmacy

Dominick's Community Residency Partnership

Dominick’s, a division of Safeway, is one of the leading grocery store chains in the Chicago area. For more than a decade, Dominick's Pharmacy has taken a proactive approach in providing pharmaceutical care services and has been recognized for their innovations. The resident will practice in a patient-centered care model pharmacy which is ideally designed for patient care, counseling, and conducting educational programs. The resident will be exposed to the skill set required to independently integrate clinical services into a dispensing pharmacy setting to enhance the quality of patient care.

Program Highlights

Dominick's Pharmacy has one of the longest running community pharmacy residency programs. It is among the first programs accredited in the nation and the first in Illinois.
