One of the reasons I came to work at Midwestern University is because I truly believe in what we are doing here. Education has always been a personal passion and educating students in fields that are under-staffed is even better. A few weeks ago I had the chance to really show my commitment to the cause when our Physician Assistant (PA) program asked me to help prepare students for their women and children rotations.
I'm sure you've seen or heard the stories of health care professionals being cornered at cocktail parties so a random guest can get his or her funny shaped mole examined. So does that happen at Midwestern University where staff members like me are surrounded by health professionals and health professionals in training?
With the annual Groovin' in the Grove 5K Run and Fun Walk just days away, I've evaluated that both my body and my finish time will not be on par as last year's 38:43 time.
With nearly 300 guests on the Downers Grove Campus, the official spring open house was a smashing success!
In just a few days, the Downers Grove campus will be holding the annual spring open house on Wednesday, April 22nd at 4:00 PM. The event is formally called the Health Professions Career Day.
The Downers Grove Campus hosted 100 high school students during spring break as part of the 2009 Health Sciences Day. This popular program drew students from all over the Chicagoland area. Most students were juniors and seniors in high school who were taking advanced science classes.
The competition was stiff, the nominees anxious, and the room rife with anticipation as the Downers Grove Chamber Choice Awards were announced this week at the DoubleTree Guest Suites and Conference Center. Midwestern University was one of the finalists in the Community Contribution Award/Philanthropic Category and I had the pleasure of being at the MWU table to root us on.
There is a "note" making its way around Facebook, where, once tagged, you have to write 25 random things about yourself. I have actually learned quite a lot about some of my friends through this process, so I thought I would write a list for MWU.
Glendale is home not only to Midwestern University but also the stadium of the Arizona Cardinals. This year, like much of football-loving America, I became a fan.
Like most people, every year I make a New Year's resolution related to eating better, losing weight, and exercising more. We always mean well, but we seldom stick with our goals much past January.
Today's guest blog comes from Karen Mattox, Manager of Communications and Community Relations on the Glendale Campus. She coordinated a media appearance with the local ABC affiliate Channel 15 and one of MWU's podiatry faculty.
Today's guest blog comes from Damienne Souter, Development & Alumni Relations Specialist on the Downers Grove Campus. She describes how she overcame her fears in order to help others.
Yesterday, I had the privilege in participating in a conference call with eight alumni from MWU, representing all of our colleges. The call was with a member of the accreditation team that was reviewing our University. The accreditor asked a simple question: How has MWU prepared you for your job in health care?
Today's guest blog comes from Courtney Sullivan, MWU's Manager of Marketing and new mother-to-be.
Happy New Year! Here at MWU, we are looking forward to many new things in the coming year. Here are just a few highlights:
This week, Dr. G hosted holiday luncheons for the faculty and staff of both MWU campuses. These events allow the entire campus community to come together and celebrate the season. After a delicious meal, a raffle of gifts is held, with the Administrative Team passing out the prizes to the winners.
Each year at our annual Holiday Reception, Dr. Goeppinger selects an alumnus to recognize for his/her lifelong service to MWU. Last Friday, we were privileged to honor Dr. Louis Gierke, CCOM Class of 1957 and longtime Chair of the Department of Pathology and Residency Program Director.
Last Friday, the White Coat Ceremony for the 700+ first-year students on the Glendale Campus was held in the new Auditorium Building. And, when I say "new," I mean that this was literally the first event ever held in this impressive facility.
When I was little, I wanted to be a vet. While that didn't end up being my career, with two dogs and two cats, I am a frequent consumer of veterinary services. With my August addition to the family of Sarah, the 3-year-old golden retriever rescue, I think I'm going to have my hands full for some time.
MWU recently announced an exciting new partnership with USA Basketball and the City of Glendale, whereby we will develop a sports medicine clinic for the new Olympic Basketball training facility here in Arizona.
