A blog by Karen Johnson, Ph.D., Vice President of University Relations

March 13, 2007

As you may have read in earlier blogs, my mother has been in the hospital since Super Bowl Sunday (about 6 weeks now) with a combination of pneumonia and congestive heart failure, during which time she was on a ventilator for about 12 days. She has now been in an inpatient hospital rehabilitation unit for the past two weeks. Her recovery has been aided by the treatment and care of some wonderful physical and occupational therapists. They are my mom's new heroes.

Today's guest blog comes from Karen Mattox, who is the Manager of Communications and Community Relations at our Glendale Campus. Karen has been with MWU for about 10 years, and she is responsible for organizing our many high school programs. We host these programs both as a community service and to help in student recruitment. We find that they offer a mutually beneficial opportunity for high school students to explore their interests in health and medicine, for MWU students to hone their teaching and mentoring skills, and for MWU staff to pick up some health tips of their own! Please enjoy Karen's comments in this year's high school season.

Today's guest blog comes from Abena Patton, who is the Special Events and Web Manager at our Downers Grove Campus. She writes about one of her favorite campus events, the MWU Health Science Day for High School Students.

For the "regular" readers of my blog, I am happy to report that my mom is doing much better. I was so touched and overwhelmed by the many people who wrote comments and kept my family in your thoughts and prayers. I thought I'd give you a brief update, and also talk to you about the health care and spirituality programs we have on our campuses.

Like any University, Midwestern works hard to be a strong and active presence in our local community. Since we are solely focused on graduate health care programs, MWU is a bit more obscure and mysterious to most residents compared to a typical undergraduate school or community college. However, over the past several years we have worked hard to become more actively involved in the community. Our best ambassadors, of course, are our students.
