Arizona Ultrafest 2019 is a one-day event designed for healthcare professional students, faculty, preceptors, and administrators from all medical institutions in Arizona. The symposium is intended to be an annual event, that provides students the opportunity to further their bedside ultrasound skills and network with colleagues and intructors. Throughout the morning there will be a choice of five ultrasound-based workshops offered to students followed by an educational forum, lunch, raffle, and keynote speaker. We will end our day with the friendly Ultrasound Scanning Competition where students, faculty, and preceptors will have the opportunity to battle one another in their scanning skills.
Our purpose in hosting this festival is to help reinforce the ultrasound foundation each student possesses, describe our ultrasound curriculum, and provide our attendees with an ideal enviornment to grow their own ultrasound skills.
Ultrafest Workshops 8:00 AM - 11:30 AM
Lower Extremity Musculoskeletal Ultrasound
Faculty: John Tassone, D.P.M.
Identification of lower extremity anatomy including: achilles tendon, posterior tibial tendon, tibialis anterior muscle, tibial nerve, anterior talofibular ligament, calcaneal fibular ligament, plantar plate ligament, plantar fascia, posterior tibial artery and veins. Analysis of lower extremity pathology and deep vein thrombosis screening.
Focused Assessment with Sonography in Trauma (FAST) Exam
Faculty: Mathew Graber, M.D.; Wayne Martini, M.D.; Dane Caputo, D.O.
Perform the FAST exam and practice obtaining the following views: morison pouch, persplenic, pelvic, subxiphoid, anterior thoracic, right and left pericolic gutter, pleural space, parasternal, apical, inferior vena cava. Observe a normal FAST exam on volunteer ultrasound models then practice your skills on trainers with positive FAST findings.
Ultrasound Assisted Central and Peripheral Line Placement
Faculty: Lisa DeWinter, M.D.; George Chen, D.O., MPH
Practice your ultrasound guided central and peripheral line placement on phantoms and discuss the circumstances under which these procedures might take place.
Ectopic Pregnancy Case
Faculty: Farshad Agahi, M.D., FACOG
Work through the relevant ultrasound scans of a normal and ectopic pregnancy case on a simulation model. Visualize gestational yolk sac and fetal pole within the uterine cavity, measure crown-rump length, determine gestational age, and identify the fetal pole in a fallopian tube.
Ultrasound Guided Nerve Block and Transesophageal Echocardiogram
Faculty: Rodney Fisher, Ph.D., CRNA
Identify appropriate nerve block locations on volunteer ultrasound models and practice needling on phantom trainers. Observe and perform a simulated transesophageal echocardiogram on a simulator and correctly achieve the appropriate cardiac views.
Keynote Speaker: Teresa Wu, M.D.
Dr. Teresa Wu is a graduate of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and completed her Emergency Medicine residency at Stanford University. She completed both ultrasound and
administrative/simulation fellowships at Stanford University following completion of her residency training in Emergency Medicine. She is currently the Director of the Simulation Curriculum and an Associate Professor in Emergency Medicine at the University of Arizona, College of Medicine-Phoenix. She manages a multidisciplinary team of clinicians and educators at the University. In addition, Dr. Wu also works clinically as an emergency medicine physician and is the Director of Emergency Ultrasound & Fellowships for the Banner University Medical Center-Phoenix. Over her career, Dr. Wu has developed and directed multiple ultrasound and simulation fellowships across the country, served as an Associate Residency Director for Emergency Medicine residency programs, and has been invited as the honored keynote speaker for numerous international conferences and corporations. Dr. Wu's innovative research and publications have led to advances in medical simulation, education, and point-of-care ultrasound. She has served as the guest editor for Critical Care Clinics of North America and has been an editor and reviewer for numerous publications worldwide. Dr. Wu is the CEO and President of SonoSupport and her point-of-care ultrasound app from SonoSupport has been used to develop ultrasound education and curricula throughout the world.

Integrated Ultrasound Curriculum
Beginning in 2017, AZCOM initiated an integrated ultrasound training aspect to the preclinical, clinical, and postgraduate curriculum. This exciting curricular addition has been achieved through the inclusion of ultrasound into our first two years in Anatomy, Introduction to Clinical Medicine, Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine, and Physiology courses. In anatomy, students are introduced to ultrasound through eight clinically based, hands-on workshops in which they scan each other with both standard and hand-held ultrasound devices. The OMM course includes four clinically based, hands-on workshops over its two-year preclinical curriculum. Physiology has two clinically based, hands-on workshops during the fall and winter quarters. In addition to these courses, students can enroll in an ultrasound elective for more advanced training. The clinical curriculum includes multiple rotations in which ultrasound is utilized including OB/Gyn, Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Critical Care, and several other specialties.
AZCOM maintains a high efficacy in ultrasound instruction through an ongoing inter professional faculty development program, that works with on campus faculty and community preceptors. The leaders of the faculty development program are our partner sonographers, Malka Stromer, MEd, RDMS, and Jeannine Noble, PT, MS, RMSK, who have years of experience in the field, along with clinical faculty practicing in diverse specialties across the valley.Additional ultrasound activities for students include several student led workshops in the Ultrasound Club, our annual Ultrafest event for regional schools, and training on simulators that provide experience with pathology and procedural training. Students are able to practice a variety of scanning modalities such as central line placement, focused assessment sonography in trauma (FAST), OB/GYN, nerve blocks, cardiac pathology, as well as point of care ultrasound (POCUS).Overall, the AZCOM ultrasound integrated curriculum has been a very successful and exciting addition to our curriculum, and is the model for further growth into other MWU programs.
Malka Stromer, M.Ed., RDMS is a registered diagnostic medical sonographer whose clinical skills were fostered at the University Health Network and Mount Sinai's Center of Excellence in Obstetrical Ultrasound, in Toronto, Canada. Malka has spent the past 12 years of her career sharing her enthusiasm for sonography as a professor, first at her alma mater, Mohawk College (the collaborative Mohawk-McMaster Institute for Applied Health Sciences) and currently at Gateway Community College in Phoenix, Arizona. She earned her Bachelor's of Science and Master's of Education from York University in Toronto, Canada. Malka has spoken at various professional events and educational institutions on topics including sonography of the bowel and her research in the ethics of obstetrical ultrasound. She has authored a chapter in a sonography text, and has won a research award through the SDMS, and most recently the John and Suanne Rouche Excellence Award through the League for Innovation in the Community Colleges. Malka is co-founder of the 'HUG' (Healthcare United at Gateway) Clinic, which allows her students to work with real patients and collaborate with other healthcare professionals, while providing pro-bono care to the community. Over the past year, Malka has been working with the faculty at Midwestern and A.T. Still University to enhance their ultrasound knowledge and skills with the prospect of assisting with the integration of ultrasound into the doctor of osteopathic medicine curriculum. This project has consisted of monthly seminars covering all aspects of ultrasound imaging, with a didactic and hands-on component.
Jeannine Noble, PT, M.S., RMSK received her physical therapy degree at AZ School of Health Sciences (AT Still) in 1999. In the final semester of school, she was introduced to musculoskeletal ultrasound and found it to be a unique specialty in ultrasound that incorporated the anatomy background of physical therapy. Although there was very little written about musculoskeletal ultrasound in 2000, she was fortunate enough to work with physicians who saw the benefits of this new diagnostic tool. Jeannine has performed too many scans to count in multiple specialty practices including orthopedic, physical medicine and rehab and podiatry. She has also done training for GE, Esaote, Ezono and Healcerion. She has conducted trainings for private practices and large groups. She has worked on research projects at AT Still and various private entities. Most recently Jeannine has been working with the faculty at Midwestern and AT Still helping to implement a Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) program. The goal of this program is to introduce ultrasound to the osteopathic students and assist them in becoming proficient users of ultrasound for basic diagnostic and interventional procedures.

Calling all Arizona healthcare students, residents, faculty and preceptors! Make your teams of fantastic fours and register to score. Get ready to scan against the clock and other students in this friendly Ultrasound Scanning Competition. Be prepared for uncanny ultrasound tasks, tales of trivia, collaboration, prizes, and a whole lot more.
The Ultrasound Scanning Competition will take place during the afternoon session of Arizona Ultrafest in the Midwestern Wellness Center Gym. Each team will be paired with an ultrasound, volunteer ultrasound model, and a team judge that will be timing them and grading their correctness in task completion. We encourage all attendees of Ultrafest to come watch the event and cheer on their respective teams.
