Students from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine (CCOM) are working to develop programs to enhance their networking and professional skills. The Student Osteopathic Medical Association’s (SOMA) Professional Development Committee on the Downers Grove Campus are offering a variety of virtual events to encourage first- and second-year medical students to develop in areas that extend beyond academia.

During the fall, the group hosted a CV/Resume workshop co-hosted by Tricia Krohmer, M.S., M.B.A., Director of the Costin Institute, who provided insight on the key professional elements medical students should focus on and why it’s important to start thinking strategically about their resumes. In December, the group hosted a “1x Book Club at 2x Speed” virtual discussion where students shared ideas from books that made an impact on them as students and helped them grow. This allowed the participants to broaden their perspectives and learn about great ideas from a variety of sources that they might not have time to read while studying.

 The committee’s events are part of a larger project called the Personal Development (PD) Series which will culminate with a professional development certification for students and a networking event with faculty.
