The beloved founding Dean of the Midwestern University Arizona College of Optometry, Donald E. Jarnagin, O.D., has been posthumously recognized for his many years of selfless service to those in need by DOCARE International.
The DOCARE Ernest A. Allaby Founder’s Award recognizes recipients who have proven their commitment to DOCARE’s goals through service to medically underserved people through participation and leadership in DOCARE outreach; promotion at the local, state, national or international level; philanthropic support; and upholding the values, goals and ideals for which DOCARE stands. This year’s award posthumously honors the life and legacy of Dr. Jarnagin, who passed away in March 2019 while treating patients on a medical mission trip in Guatemala. Dr. Jarnagin embarked on his first DOCARE trip in 2007 and participated almost annually from that point on, providing eye care and thousands of pairs of donated glasses to patients in need.
Founded in 1961, DOCARE International provides global health experiences to students, residents, and volunteers of all kinds by offering primary medical care to underserved populations through short-term global health outreach trips and permanent continuity of care clinics.
