    About one in five preschool children experience vision issues, and 25 percent of school-age require corrective lenses, according to the American Optometric Association. Midwestern University’s Eye Institute conducted the webinar “Seeing Success: Ensuring Healthy Vision for Infants and Toddlers in the Classroom” to inform the community about pediatric eye care for children and offer preventative care, advice, and answer questions.

  • Midwestern University Researcher Contributes to Global Guidelines for Extended IV Antibiotic Use

    The first international consensus recommendations on extended use of strong, infection-fighting antibiotics (beta-lactams) have been reviewed and endorsed by the American College of Clinical Pharmacy, British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, Infectious Diseases Society of America, Society of Critical Care Medicine, and Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists. Marc Scheetz, Pharm.D., M.Sc., Associate Dean of Research and Professor at Midwestern University was the senior author of a 17-person, multidisciplinary author panel to develop the guidelines which were published in the August 2023 issue of Pharmacotherapy, an official journal of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy.

  • MWU Kids Day Offers Children a Glimpse into the Midwestern University Experience

    Midwestern University welcomed 107 children to its 21st annual MWU Kids Day, held at the Downers Grove Campus. The event encourages Midwestern University employees to bring the children in their lives to campus. As part of the event, the children experienced a few informative sessions, learned more about Midwestern University, and had the afternoon to spend time with their parent, relative, or guardian at their workplace to glimpse their professional lives. The children also had the opportunity to meet the colleagues of the adults in their lives and tour the campus.

  • First-Generation Stories Shared by Midwestern University Community

    Midwestern University students, faculty, and staff gathered to hear a panel share their common story. The panel included faculty from the College of Dental Medicine-Illinois (CDMI), the Chicago College of Optometry (CCO), the College of Health Sciences (CHS), the College of Graduate Studies, and members of the Student Services staff who are the first in their family to graduate from college. Through this shared experience, students in similar situations and event attendees gained insight into how others worked through similar situations and challenges in their pursuit of higher education.

As part of the four-day experience, 25 high school students from the surrounding suburbs discovered more about various professions in the healthcare field and the ways an education at Midwestern University will help students achieve their career goals.

  • Midwestern University Dental Students Awarded Prestigious Scholarship

    The Illinois State Dental Society Foundation (ISDS) awarded scholarships to two Midwestern University students. The scholarship committee selected a total of six students from several Illinois dental schools from 45 applicants. Representing a third of the scholarship winners are Midwestern University’s College of Dental Medicine – Illinois (CDMI) students Julia Brainard (CDMI ’24) and Aldona Puchalski (CDMI ’24).

  • Artist Discussed Lived Experience with Disability in the Healthcare System

    The College of Health Science Interprofessional Committee hosted Understanding the Lived Experience of People with Disabilities: An Interprofessional Event that featured Riva Lehrer, author, artist, and instructor at Northwestern University and the Art Institute of Chicago. Ms. Lehrer wrote the book “Golem Girl: A Memoir,” where she described living with spina bifida, coming into her identity, and navigating adulthood.

  • Movement Therapy at Midwestern University Clinics Assists Patients with Spinal Issues

    About 39 percent of adults experience back pain, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Through Midwestern University’s Physical Therapy (PT) Institute, patients suffering from spinal issues can receive movement therapy to heal and manage pain following a disc herniation, chronic back pain, or bulging discs, as well as receive treatment for a range of spinal issues.

  • CDMI and CHS collaborate on Hand Joint Hypermobility Study

    Midwestern University faculty and students from the College of Dental Medicine – Illinois (CDMI) and the Occupational Therapy Program in the College of Health Sciences (CHS) in Downers Grove joined forces in an ongoing research project to investigate hypermobility among first-year dental students. Both Colleges brought their specialized skill sets to this project.
