Faculty, Students Selected for American Medical Association Research Challenge Finals

Representing Midwestern University as one of five nationwide finalists at the American Medical Association (AMA) Research Challenge Finals are Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine (CCOM) students Srujith Medharametla (CCOM ’26) and Garrett Borger (CCOM ’26), who conducted a research project under the direction of Isabel Martinez-Pena y Valenzuela, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Physiology, College of Graduate Studies on the Downers Grove Campus. The AMA Research Challenge is a national multi-specialty research conference for medical students, international medical graduates, fellows, and residents to present and show their research. Dr. Martinez-Pena y Valenzuela, Srujith, and Garrett will be at the finals in February.

  • Midwestern University Community Event Provides Insights on Aphasia and Stroke

    The Midwestern University Speech-Language Pathology Program and the University chapter of the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA) hosted an event to provide information and insight into aphasia and stroke. Aphasia is a language disorder that occurs due to damage to parts of the brain that process various aspects of language and communication. Students in several healthcare fields of study from the College of Health Sciences (CHS) and the Chicago College of Optometry (CCO) gave presentations about their expertise, and community members living with aphasia or the aftereffects of a stroke shared their experiences. About 126 faculty, students, and members of the community were in attendance.

    Several Midwestern University students from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine (CCOM) went to the annual American Osteopathic Association’s (AOA) OMED (Osteopathic Medical Education Conference) in Florida, where thousands of healthcare professionals, osteopathic physicians, medical students, and undergraduate students gathered. Attendees had the opportunity to learn more about a variety of specialties and meet each other.

  • Midwestern Faculty Member Part of Team that Discovered New Dinosaur Species

    November 16, 2023

    Eric Gorscak, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Anatomy, College of Graduate Studies (CGS) is part of an international research team that identified a new species of the titanosaur dinosaur in Egypt called Igai semkhu. The species lived about 75 million years ago and is part of a group of herbivore dinosaurs with long necks.

  • Midwestern University Honors Littlejohn Award Recipients

    During the annual Employee Recognition Event, four members of Midwestern University’s faculty and staff, two on the Downers Grove Campus and two on the Glendale Campus, were awarded the Littlejohn Award, Midwestern University’s highest honor, for exemplary service during their careers at the University. The recipients were Christopher Camaioni, B.A., Director of Campus Facilities, Stephen Palatinus, D.D.S., M.P.H., Associate Dean of the College of Dental Medicine-Illinois (CDMI), Shane Palmer, Director of Campus Facilities, and Steven Call, D.D.S., Associate Dean of the College of Dental Medicine-Arizona (CDMA).

This discussion also prepared students to handle unexpected situations in their future careers. Events like these are a part of Midwestern University’s commitment to fostering patient-centered healthcare practitioners.

  • Midwestern University Clinics Implement Epic®, Electronic Health Records (EHR) System

    As part of its commitment to support the One Health Initiative and embrace evolving technology, the Epic® system was added to bring four separate EHR (Electronic Health Records) for the Dental Institute, the Eye Institute, the Multispecialty Clinic, and the Therapy Institute into one system. Many patients seek care in several departments at the University’s Clinics and the Epic® system creates ease of use. Patients can access their healthcare information in one convenient spot, and reach out to their providers, schedule appointments, view test results, and manage the healthcare needs of their families. In addition, the patient records will be accessible throughout the Midwestern University Clinics to provide better healthcare services and allow for interdisciplinary collaboration on the best treatment for patients.

  • Optometry Students Perform Vision Screening on Incoming Dental Students

    As part of Midwestern University’s commitment to the One Health Initiative and interprofessional education, optometry students performed several vision tests as part of a binocular vision screening on incoming dental students at the University’s Eye Institute in Downers Grove, Illinois and Glendale, Arizona. The vision tests included visual acuity (the eye’s ability to see details on an object from a certain distance and identify shapes), retinoscopy (a test for refractive eye errors such as astigmatism, nearsightedness, and farsightedness), and depth perception. The first-year dental students were measured for their dental loupes, a magnification tool. They were also informed if they needed a further exam by an optometrist, and if they were showing signs of underlying conditions. The dental and optometry students interacted with each other and learned more about each other’s field of healthcare.

  • Pickleball Tournament Raised Money and Awareness for Breast Cancer

    Midwestern University students in the Endodontics & Periodontal Club CDMI (College of Dental Medicine-Illinois) and the CDMI Wilderness Club hosted the inaugural Halloween-themed Pickle-O-Treat pickleball tournament. Proceeds went to The Pink Agenda, a nonprofit organization that promotes awareness about breast cancer and raises funds for research and healthcare.
