The University created the Institute for Healthcare Innovation (IHI), a new multidisciplinary research center spanning both Midwestern University campuses. At the IHI, professional personnel specializing in clinical operations, biostatistics, data management, regulatory affairs, quality assurance, subject recruiting, and veterinary technology focus on research areas including oncology, neuroscience, the human-animal bond, and behavior with an emphasis on neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s.
Midwestern University’s commitment to intramural student and faculty One Health research awards stimulated several collaborative research projects on both campuses. One Health grants are now being offered to promote research partnerships for multiple fields to work together. To be eligible for One Health grants, applicants must demonstrate how their data will enhance two of three branches – human health, animal health, and the environment.
Midwestern University created the Nanomedicine Center of Excellence in Translational Cancer Research. The center is composed of interdisciplinary research faculty from clinical practices and both campuses in order to advance the knowledge and application of the next generation of personalized and targeted cancer medicines. In addition, the Center aims to enhance scholarly activity and research; support the education of future healthcare team professionals; solidify productive collaboration of interdisciplinary teams of faculty to attract extramural grant funding; coordinate Midwestern University preclinical research training programs; and to establish collaborative partnerships with regional industries and lead clinical practices.
The Institute for Healthcare Innovation and the Colleges of Veterinary Medicine, Health Sciences, and Pharmacy are collaborating on a clinical study in dogs suffering from ear infections. The rise in bacterial resistance is considered one of the greatest global threats in medicine. After the Veterinary Medicine team collects samples from the dogs’ ears, faculty from the College of Health Sciences isolate the microbes, and pharmacy faculty perform antimicrobial susceptibilities profiles.
