Since joining Midwestern University I have provided oversight for numerous Pharmacy, Dental, Biomedical, and Medical students working for Research elective credit or as Federal Work Study students.  I have served as a thesis advisor for four MBS students. Eighteen students have received summer Fellowship Awards under my mentorship. I have served as the preceptor for four CCOM students performing academic rotations.  During the summer of 2016, I served as an Intern Advisor to a student from the University of Kentucky Biomedical Program. In addition, two international exchange students (one from Pisa, Italy and one from Istanbul, Turkey) have worked in the laboratory under my direction.

I am a broadly trained scientist with an MS in Biochemistry, and a PhD in Immunology.  In the interim between completing my MS and starting my PhD I worked as a Research Associate at Pfizer on an osteoporosis project. This experience peaked my interest in translational applications of basic research, and as a consequence, I have successfully patented several innovative methodologies to examine G Protein Coupled Receptors (GPCRs) (US Patents 6,559,128; 7,208,279; 7,294,472; 8,193,151). My contribution to science include 49 publications with over 3000 citations (h-index 26, i10-index 34, R-score 34.79). Through the years I have studied numerous GPCRs including the visual receptor rhodopsin, the thrombin receptor PAR1, the chemokine receptors CCR1 and CCR5, and the free fatty acid receptor FFA2. GPCR drug action is much more nuanced than previously recognized.  Rather than simply turning the receptors on or off through agonists and antagonists respectively, we look to identify pathway selective “biased” drugs that may provide a mechanism for reducing unwanted side effects.

I have served as a Short Course Instructor on G protein couple receptor (GPCR)-Based Drug Discovery for many years including at the Drug Discovery Chemistry Annual Meeting, Annual World Preclinical Congress, and the Discovery on Target Annual Meeting. I am the faculty advisor to the MWU student chapter of Industry Pharmacists Organization (IPhO). I am a member of several professional orgnaizations including American Chemical Society (ACS), American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET), American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), British Pharmacological Society (BPS), and Society for Laboratory Automation and Screening (SLAS).
