About

Dr. De Gracia divides his time between running a visual optics research lab and teaching in the professional Doctor of Optometry program.  His interests are centered on visual perception, the impact of the eye’s optics on the visual function, and the role of ocular movements in attaining clear vision. His ongoing research is evaluating the effect of novel multifocal solutions on presbyopic vision, the application of new multifocal designs to monovison compensations, and how ocular movements affect the development of refractive errors.  Dr. De Gracia is a consultant for the contact lens and IOL industries.  He is actively involved as a grant reviewer for the National Science Centre and is a journal referee in the fields of Visual Optics, Optometry, and Ophthalmology.

Research

Dr. De Gracia's background is multidisciplinary. The works produced in the lab are focused on Optometry related issues. To tackle these questions, we often use a computational approach and we  also can make use of custom made optical systems to collect the desired information. In particular, we are interested in exploring new multifocal solutions for presbyopia and the relationship between ocular movements, the perception of blur, and the process of emmetropization.

Multifocal Performance of Contact Lenses

Currently, we are interested in exploring new multifocal solutions for presbyopia. Our last work has been published in Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. You can find the article in the Publications page. The first figure of the paper is shown below.

We plan to explore the clinical applications of these designs in contact lenses in the near future. We have a database of more than 1000 patients (both eyes) collected by Dr. Hartwig in Germany that allow to perform simulations of optical quality under realistic cinrcunstances. Also, all the clinical equipment present at The Eye Institute of Midwestern University is at our disposition for research projects.

Fixational Eye Movements

We are preparing an optical set-up capable of presenting images (with variable blur), at the same time that measurements of ocular aberrations, accommodation, and eye movements are performed.

Dr. De Gracia lab is located at White Oak Hall in the Downers Grove Campus of Midwestern University.    

Publications

Professor De Gracia has published 22 articles in high-impact international journals (h-index: 13) and is an inventor in one US patent. He often contributes with scientific presentations to the meetings of the Association for Research on Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) and of the American Academy of Optometry (AAO). Dr. De Gracia received two Ezell Fellowships from the Foundation of the American Academy of Optometry, one Scholarship in Optics and Photonics from the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE), and a Bisgrove Postdoctoral Award from the Science Foundation Arizona.

More Information

Dr. De Gracia lab counts with reserved research spaceat White Oak Hall in the Downers Grove Campus of Midwestern University. De Gracia Lab houses a state of the art psychophysical system that will measure eye movements as a function of the level of defocus of the image presented and of the refractive state of the patient. The main components of this system are an Eye tracker (Eyelink 1000 plus), two motorized badal systems, and a spatial light modulator to define the entrance pupil of the eye.

A list of the available equipment at the clinic can be seen below: The equipment and the patient populations present at The Eye Institute of Midwestern University offer the perfect enviroment for conducting clinical research.

Particularly, the Nimo TR1504 and the custom build optical system are a great combination that allows to explore the optical profiles of multifocal contact lenses. Allowing also to consider the optical aberrations of patients.
