Course Description

CBCT is an excellent 3D imaging modality. This course will provide the opportunity to learn the basic principles of CBCT imaging in dentistry and interpretation. The workshop includes 08 hours of interactive lectures on the physics and biology of radiation, basics of interpretation of maxillofacial pathology, CT anatomy, variants, artifacts, protocols, indications, contraindications, doses, and position papers from different specialty groups. Participants may bring up to 2 cases for discussion, with signed informed consent from the patient. Following self-interpretation activities, over-reads will be done by radiologist as a team-effort.

Attorney Susan McLellan, a defense expert in dental malpractice cases and partner at Schneider & Onofry Law Group, will lead the discussion of legal and ethical standard of care through sharing case studies involving CBCT imaging.

Course Objectives:

  1. Describe brief physics & radiation dose "what makes Cone Beam so different from medical CT",
  2. List the capabilities of different imaging units and limitations,
  3. Understand radiation safety as it pertains to the use of CBCT
  4. List the advantages and disadvantages of CBCT,
  5. Ethical and medicolegal considerations of CBCT Imaging,
  6. Preventive strategies to avoid implant law suits,
  7. Discuss legal and ethical standard of care involving CBCT imaging,
  8. Radiographic anatomy and variations of normal maxillofacial anatomy as it relates to Implant Dentistry,
  9. 3-D appearance of common pathology, and
  10. Clinical applications: review of cases

Presenter:

Vijay Parashar, DDS, MDSc. - Professor/Oral Radiologist: Professor/Oral Radiologist: Diplomate, American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology Councilor, American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology Director, Central Arizona Dental Society   Dr. Parashar, received DDS from University of Detroit Mercy, MDSc and Certification in Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology from University of Connecticut. He is serving as Professor with Tenure at the Midwestern University in Arizona. He received Howard R. Raper Award and William H. Rollins Award for Research by the AAOMR. He has served as Chair of Oral Radiology section of American Dental Education Association. He is Chair of Pierre Fauchard Academy, Arizona section. He is on the editorial review board of various national and international journals. He has conducted and published basic science, translational and clinical research with ongoing emphasis on interdisciplinary imaging research. Dr. Parashar is serving on the National Dental Board Test Construction Committee, American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) Oral Radiology Review Committee and is a CODA Site Visitor.

Susan McLellan, JD, is a litigation attorney with extensive trial experience in the areas of health care, medical malpractice, dental malpractice, and medical products liability defense litigation. Susan is uniquely qualified to represent health care clients. Her professional background as a registered nurse, with an emphasis in medical-surgical intensive care, provides invaluable knowledge and insight in representing health care clients in litigation and in administrative proceedings. In addition to defending health care providers in litigation matters, Susan provides representation in professional licensure and disciplinary matters before state licensing boards, including the Arizona State Board of Dental Examiners.

Cancellation and Refund Information:

The Midwestern University College of Dental Medicine-Arizona Continuing Dental Education (MWUCDM-AZ CDE) office reserves the right to end registration when the enrollment limit is reached and to cancel, modify or alter content, faculty or location for any course if circumstances indicate such a change is advisable. If the MWUCDM-AZ CDE finds it necessary to cancel a course, a full refund will be issued. No travel expenses will be refunded to the registrant in the event of course cancellation or cancellation of any registration. Full tuition refunds are issued if the participant cancels in writing two weeks prior to a course. Cancellations processed during the two weeks prior to course date will be refunded tuition minus a late cancellation fee of $75.

No refunds will be issued for cancellations received three days prior to the day of the course or in the event of a no-show. Select courses may have individually specific cancellation fees and polices. A $50 fee will be assessed for all returned payments. Returned payments include returned checks and dishonored credit or debit card payments.
