Office of Research and Sponsored Programs
Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC)
Welcome to the new Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) website. The role of the IBC is to review research involving recombinant and synthetic nucleic acid molecules. The purpose of this site it to provide MWU investigator, research staff, and students all the information needed to work in a safe environment. Here, you will find the forms needed to register your research project with the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs. Registration is required to be compliant with Federal and State regulatory agencies. Links to the NIH Guidelines, the CDC, and the 6th Edition of the BMBL (Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories). These websites provide guidance for the safe practices in research and the regulations regarding research using recombinant and synthetic nucleic acids. These documents also provide guidelines for the proper containment practices for Risk Group 1 and 2 agents that are used at the campuses of Midwestern University. Midwestern University is not approved for the use of Risk Group 3 agents at this time.
All project registration or changes to existing projects begin by contacting Nicholas Cronk with the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs. From here, you will be directed to contact the Biosafety Officers at either Downers Grove, IL or Glendale, AZ location. Dr. Brian Wellensiek is the Biosafety Officer for the Glendale AZ campus and Dr. Richard Laddaga is the Biosafety Officer for the Downers Grove IL campus. Questions or comments regarding navigation or problems with this website can be addressed to Karolina Klosowska. Questions about biosafety and compliance with the NIH Guidelines can be directed to the Institutional Biosafety Committee Chair, Dr. Steve Libby.
It is important that you feel free to contact the Biosafety Officers for questions about research and laboratory safety. Our goal is to provide all the resources necessary for you to carryout research productively and safely.
