Message from the President
It is my honor to welcome you to Midwestern University’s virtual commencement ceremony for the College of Health Sciences, Downers Grove Campus. This year has been unlike any we have ever experienced, and I cannot be more impressed by and grateful for all our students, faculty, and staff at Midwestern University. They have worked together to respond to new challenges with resilience, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. While I truly wish we could all be together for this momentous occasion, I know that the true spirit of our University is not dependent on a place, time, or gathering.
The Midwestern University family comes together today to celebrate the academic accomplishments of our extraordinary students. Our commencements have always focused on our graduates while acknowledging the faculty, loved ones, and supporters who helped them reach this important milestone. I personally thank every graduate for being a member of the Midwestern University academic community and entrusting us with their dreams.
Commencement is a joyful event that celebrates all of your accomplishments, but it is also an opportunity to remember love ones who, although no longer with us, made a big impact in your lives. I invite you to reflect on the care, love, and generosity you received from those special individuals, and, if you wish, dedicate your graduation to them. It is my sincere hope that you will always cherish the memories of your loved ones’ kindnesses and support through your education, and that those memories will encourage you to return those kindnesses to your patients and communities.
During your rigorous course of study at Midwestern University, you also found time to come together as a class and celebrated birthdays, weddings and several engagements. Over the course of your studies to become physician assistants and clinical psychologists you still found time to give of yourselves through service. We applaud the Class of 2020 graduates for their commitment to community outreach, demonstrated by the time, skills, and energies you spent helping those in need. I encourage you to continue your outreach as you move forward into your careers, because it will not only change others’ lives, but also your own.
This class of Physician Assistants worked together to provide meals for hospital staff on the front-lines of the COVID-19 crisis. They also demonstrated their creativity by creating a truly scary haunted house as part of the annual Halloween Fest, participated in the Angel Tree Christmas Drive for children, and volunteered at the Chicago Shamrock Shuffle race. They also inspired future generations of healthcare professionals by leading sessions about the PA profession as part of the University’s Healthcare Career Day for High School Students.
Our Clinical Psychology graduates excelled in and out of the classroom and hosted a variety of community programs including the annual Improv show to raise money for charity, hosting a dance for Seaspar clients, and packing meals for the Feed My Starving Children organization. In addition, these doctoral candidates were very successful with their internship placements and achieved a 100 percent match rate to American Psychological Association accredited internship sites throughout the country.
While some of you will be staying in Illinois, the rest will be going out across the nation to begin your careers. Wherever you go, we know that you will represent Midwestern University and your College well, and that the lessons you learned over four years of study will help you become the best version of yourselves, personally and professionally.
Please join me in celebrating our graduates and know that they leave Midwestern University with the full love and support of their faculty and staff. We are so proud of each and every one of our graduates who will soon join the team of healthcare heroes caring for our nation. Thank you for letting Midwestern University be a part of your journey.
