Message from the President

It is my honor to welcome you to Midwestern University’s virtual commencement ceremony for the College of Graduate Studies, Class of 2021. This virtual ceremony is a time for family, friends, and loved ones to celebrate the important achievements of your graduate. While large, in-person celebrations are not possible this year, I look forward to seeing many of our graduates at an optional special closing ceremony. Although the closing ceremony is limited to graduates only, we will record this event and provide a link for viewing with family and friends. I thank you for your understanding, patience, and continued commitment to excellence as together we have successfully faced so many new challenges brought about by the global pandemic.

Our Midwestern University family comes together virtually today to celebrate the academic accomplishments of our Biomedical Sciences graduates. Our commencements have always focused on our graduates while acknowledging the faculty, loved ones, and supporters who helped them reach this important milestone. I personally thank every graduate for being a member of the Midwestern University academic community and entrusting us with their dreams.

Commencement is a joyful event that celebrates all of your accomplishments, but it is also an opportunity to remember love ones who, although no longer with us, made a big impact in your lives. I know this class experienced the loss of loved ones and close friends. I invite you to reflect on the care, love, and generosity you received from those special individuals, and, if you wish, dedicate your graduation to them. It is my sincere hope that you will always cherish the memories of your loved ones’ kindnesses and support throughout your education.

This is a very accomplished class and your Dean and professors noted how many of you excelled at research and sought out ways to make a positive contribution to your class and your community. Many of you received national and local research awards and several of you submitted abstracts and articles to professional scientific journals. In addition to your rigorous course of study, you found time to give of yourselves, co-hosting the annual Breakfast with Santa event, collaborating with your fellow students at the annual Halloween Fest and Easter Fest, raising funds to help purchase personal protective equipment (PPE) for hospitals, working with charities to fight cancer, and addressing issues relevant to diversity, equity, and inclusion. In addition, several of you participated in overdose responder training to become Nalox-now certified and volunteered at Midwestern University’s Operation Hope Vaccination Center to help provide COVID-19 vaccines to grateful faculty, staff, students, and community members.

Many of our Biomedical Sciences graduates will be back in Midwestern University classrooms and lecture halls very soon. Members of your class are already accepted into our osteopathic medicine, dental medicine, physical therapy, and pharmacy programs and others were accepted into professional programs elsewhere. The course for success that you charted in the Biomedical Sciences program will serve you well as you pursue your healthcare career goals.

Some of you have already found employment in research, and in these challenging times, the world will benefit from your training and skills. For those of you entering the military, we are tremendously proud that you will represent the University as you serve our nation. Wherever you go, we know that you will represent Midwestern University and your College well.

Please join me in celebrating our Biomedical Sciences graduates and know that they are leaving Midwestern University with the full love and support of their faculty and staff. We are so proud of each and every one of our graduates. Thank you for letting Midwestern University be a part of your journey.
