RESEARCH SUMMARY

Glucose transporters in pancreatic beta cells.

The glucose transporter, GLUT2, shuttles glucose across the beta cell plasma membrane.  In the cytosol of the beta cell, generation of ATP by glycolysis leads to secretion of insulin, a hormone that promotes glucose uptake by glucose-independent cells, such as skeletal muscle.  In patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), glucose transport across the beta cell plasma membrane may be impaired.  Studies suggest that GLUT2 transporters may be altered in mouse models of glucose intolerance including the diet-induced obese (DIO) mouse (collaboration with Dr. Mae Ciancio in Biomedical Sciences and Dr. Christian Evans in Physical Therapy) and in obese mouse models of T2DM.  Research in the lab investigates changes in beta cell GLUT2 transporters during the development of insulin resistance.
