Research projects

Project I: The use of ultrasound imaging with cadaveric dissection of fibularis (peroneus) quartus. The focus of this study was to discover the percentage of cadavers which presented with this relatively common accessory muscle of the lateral compartment of the foot and ankle. We had 15 cadavers which were available for this study. We used a quick ultrasound exam using only the transverse axis position of the probe as a screening technique to find the presents of a fibularis quartus. We then performed dissection to confirm the accessory muscle's presents. This is a collaborative project with Dr. Melanie Violand and Dr. John Tassone also from AZPod.

Project II: Examination of the congenital absence of the fourth ray (metatarsal and associated digit) of the right foot, a cadaveric case study. We are looking at the percentage of occurrence reported in the general population along with other possible associated abnormalities. This is a collaborative project with Dr. Melanie Violand and several AZPod students.

Project III: The assessment of podiatric medical care in the aging population of Maricopa County, Arizona. The objective of this study is to gain an understanding of the utilization patterns of podiatric medical services in the aging population of Maricopa County. The foot screening program was carried out from January of 2008 through June of 2011 involving 1,547 individuals, ages 50-99, from 132 area senior center visits. General medical history was performed along with evaluation of the feet and legs. We noted any observable pathologies on our screening form. This is a collaborative project with Dr. Jeffrey Page and several AZPod students.
