IL: CCOM Dean Named to National Medical Education Board

Midwestern University congratulates Karen Nichols, D.O., Dean of the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine (CCOM), on her recent appointment to the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Board of Directors, effective January 1, 2015. The directors will work to develop new guidelines and oversee the transition to a single accreditation system for graduate medical education (GME).

Dr. Nichols is one of the four osteopathic nominees to the Board which has an important responsibility in the transition to a single GME system in an effort to strengthen the medical education system and improve U.S. healthcare. The appointments are pending final approval of bylaw changes by ACGME member organizations.

As Dean of CCOM, Dr. Nichols provides leadership for its faculty, staff, and students, oversees the academic and clinical education of more than 800 medical students, and is a tireless advocate for the osteopathic profession. She is also a past-president of the American Osteopathic Association and is currently the Vice-Chair of the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine Board of Directors.
