CCOM students welcome John W. Becher, D.O., President of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), to the Downers Grove Campus.

The Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine (CCOM) and the Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA) welcomed John W. Becher, D.O., President of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), for a visit to Midwestern University's Downers Grove Campus in February.

Dr. Becher shared information with CCOM students about the demographics of the osteopathic medicine profession, the AOA's ongoing efforts to support osteopathic research, and the role medical students have as leaders and advocates for the profession.

"I encourage you to get involved in your community and let people know what osteopathic medicine is all about. In addition to medicine and surgery, we also provide the osteopathic perspective that includes evaluation and treatment," he told the first- and second-year medical students in attendance. "You are the future of the profession and we need your input," Dr. Becher added.

Dr. Becher also shared with students the new AOA multimedia ad campaign designed to increase public awareness about the unique benefits of osteopathic medicine. In addition to talking with students, Dr. Becher met with faculty and administrators from the CCOM Dean's Office and toured the campus. Dr. Becher, a board-certified emergency physician from Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, is the 119th president of the AOA.
