On Monday, June 22nd at 9 AM Midwestern University will welcome Congressman Peter Roskam (IL-06) to its Downers Grove campus at 555 31st Street. Congressman Roskam will be discussing the need for healthcare reform and the upcoming debate in Congress. Rep. Roskam has been very supportive of Midwestern University's efforts to provide quality healthcare education and to increase the number of needed healthcare providers for our community. He will address University faculty, staff, and more than 60 high school students who are participating in the Career Explorers Program -- a program for which Rep. Roskam helped secure Department of Education grant funds.
The intensive, six-week program allows high school students the opportunity to explore pharmacy as a possible career. Students spend a portion of the six-weeks in class at Midwestern University's Chicago College of Pharmacy and the other portion getting hands-on experience as pharmacy technicians at a local hospital, Walgreens, or Osco Pharmacy. Students gain valuable work experience, access to mentors, and guidance for those who wish to pursue a pharmacy education.
In addition, the Career Explorers program adds to the pool of qualified future pharmacists, with many students being offered part-time jobs in pharmacies where they gained experience. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the demand for well-trained pharmacists is expected to increase faster than average for all occupations between now and 2016.
