The Village of Downers Grove recently proclaimed October as American Pharmacist Month. Students from Midwestern University's chapter of the American Pharmacists Association Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP) worked with the Village to develop the public statement to promote the pharmacy profession.

Downers Grove Mayor Martin T. Tully delivered the proclamation at the Village Council meeting on Tuesday, September 18, 2012. "I urge all our citizens to acknowledge the valuable services of pharmacists to provide safe, affordable, and beneficial pharmaceutical care and products to all citizens," Mayor Tully said.

Third-year pharmacy student, Steven Sidelsky, APhA-ASP President, accepted the proclamation on behalf of the organization and Midwestern University. Mr. Sidelsky also delivered a message promoting the profession and the University to all in attendance at the Council meeting, as well as the local television audience. "As Midwestern University student pharmacists, we do not only study in the Village of Downers Grove, we also eat, sleep, live, and learn here. We are proud that the Village adopted this proclamation and helped spread our message: Know Your MEDICINES-Know Your PHARMACIST!" Mr. Sidelsky said. "We wanted to reach out into the community and advocate for the profession of pharmacy, so that our patients and future patients could receive the best care possible."

Midwestern University's Chicago College of Pharmacy graduates approximately 200 qualified pharmacists each year who practice in a variety of healthcare settings.
