CCOM students participate a conference to address healthcare inequalities.

Students from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine (CCOM) hosted the annual "Student Interventions in Health Inequities" conference on Midwestern University's Downers Grove Campus. The conference was developed by the Midwestern University Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA) chapter to increase medical students' knowledge about health disparities with a focus on how they can advocate for change.

The event drew students studying medicine and other healthcare fields from several local colleges and universities. At the conference, attendees learned more about disparities in the access to care, healthcare delivery systems, and how to take action to address these concerns. Discussion topics included addressing the needs of underserved patients and information about tackling health inequity through political, community, and patient advocacy.

"I really enjoyed the lecture regarding grassroots activism and the establishment of a trauma center on the Southside of Chicago," said Abby Sapadin, MS-II, CCOM. "It was important for me to see a real-world health professional actively advocating for his local patient population while achieving work-life balance. It makes me feel like I might be able to do the same one day when I'm practicing."
