AZ: Midwestern University Appoints New AZCOPT, CVM Deans

Dr. Joshua BakerKathleen H. Goeppinger, Ph.D., President and Chief Executive Officer, Midwestern University, is pleased to announce the promotion of Joshua C. Baker, O.D., M.S., to Dean of the Midwestern University Arizona College of Optometry (AZCOPT).

"We are very pleased that Dr. Joshua Baker has accepted the position of Dean of the Midwestern University Arizona College of Optometry.  Dr. Baker brings valuable experience as a leader in his profession and in his service to our country.  His enthusiasm, passion for academic excellence, and inspiring vision for the College make him a strong academic dean," said Dr. Goeppinger.

Dr. Baker previously served as Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs for the College. Dr. Baker, originally from Blossvale, New York, came to Midwestern University in April 2013 after serving as the Chief of Optometry Service at the U.S. Army Health Clinic in Stuttgart, Germany. As an Army Major, Dr. Baker spent time deployed in Al Asad, Iraq and received the Bronze Star. Dr. Baker received his bachelor's degree from Ithaca College, earned a Master of Science in Secondary Science Education from Syracuse University, and graduated Magna cum Laude from the Illinois College of Optometry.

Dr. Baker accepted the appointment after Donald E. Jarnagin, O.D., retired as Dean in July.

Dr. Thomas GravesDr. Goeppinger also announced the appointment of Thomas K. Graves, D.V.M., Ph.D., DACVIM, to Dean of the Midwestern University College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM).

"Midwestern University College of Veterinary Medicine is fortunate to have Dr. Thomas Graves in the position of academic dean.  He is a talented teacher, mentor and strong leader in the profession who brings a deep understanding of veterinary medicine and its relationship to human health.  Dr. Graves is also a strong proponent of our One Health emphasis, an attribute that will be instrumental in guiding our newest college as he leads his faculty and staff in educating our veterinary students," Dr. Goeppinger said.

Dr. Graves previously served as Associate Dean for Clinical Education at the College. Prior to joining Midwestern University, Dr. Graves was Director of the Chicago Center for Veterinary Medicine and a Professor of Veterinary Internal Medicine for the University of Illinois. He has earned multiple awards as an educator, including the Carl J. Norden-Pfizer Distinguished Teacher Award and the Chicago Veterinary Medical Association Outstanding Teacher Award. He has lectured at universities and conferences throughout North America, South America, Asia, and Europe, and has served on the Scientific Advisory Boards of the Morris Animal Foundation and the Found Animals Foundation. Dr. Graves earned his D.V.M. from Cornell University and his Ph.D. from the University of Rochester, School of Medicine and Dentistry.
