Midwestern University recently held commencement ceremonies on its Downers Grove Campus to celebrate nearly 700 graduates who are beginning their professional careers in healthcare. This year also marked the graduation of inaugural classes from two programs of study - dental medicine and speech-language pathology. During the ceremonies, Kathleen H. Goeppinger, Ph.D., President and CEO of the University, acknowledged the many achievements of the graduates during their years of rigorous study and clinical experiences.
The following commencements took place in May in the new Auditorium Building on the Downers Grove Campus:
- The Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine honored 204 graduates who earned a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) degree. Among the graduates, 58 percent will enter primary care residencies, while the rest of the class will pursue various specialties including emergency medicine, orthopedic surgery, neurological surgery, ophthalmology, radiology, psychiatry, and anesthesiology. In addition, 49 percent of the class will stay in Illinois for their postdoctoral programs, with the rest traveling to 25 other states.
- The Chicago College of Pharmacy graduated 199 students with Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degrees. The graduates will begin their professional pharmacy careers in a variety of healthcare settings. In addition, several graduates have been accepted into postgraduate residency programs.
- The College of Health Sciences graduated students from several programs. Forty-seven students earned a Doctor of Physical Therapy (D.P.T.) degree, and seven students earned a Doctor of Health Sciences degree (D.H.S.). Of the 77 students earning master's degrees in biomedical science, several graduates will matriculate to another health degree program at Midwestern. In addition, 42 students were the first to earn a Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology degree from the University.
- The College of Dental Medicine-Illinois celebrated the graduation of its inaugural class with 127 graduates earning Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.M.D.) degrees. Of the 127 graduates, 14 will pursue an advanced dental residency, 10 accepted military assignments, and four will enter the public health sector as part of the National Health Services Corp (NHSC). The remaining graduates will pursue careers in general practice dentistry.
"I am proud of all our graduates and admire their dedication and service to the community. I am confident that they will continue to succeed as healthcare professionals and embrace both the compassion and hard work they've demonstrated at Midwestern University," Dr. Goeppinger said.
