Bettie Coplan, M.P.A.S., PA-C (CHS-AZ), Assistant Professor, and James Meyer, M.D. (CHS-AZ), Associate Professor, were awarded the Physician Assistant Education Association's (PAEA's) Article of the Year Award for "Physician Assistants - One Less Doctor(ate) in the House," published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). The award, new in 2011, was presented at PAEA's recent Education Forum in New Orleans. The award was created to recognize PA educators who are publishing articles about the training and educational direction of future generations of PAs. Criteria for the winning article include having an impact on the PA profession with implications for workforce and interdisciplinary training/education.
The article reviewed the history of the PA profession's consideration of the clinical doctorate in 2009 and the continuing pressures for PAs to transition to a doctoral degree.
