Midwestern University bestowed its highest honor - the Littlejohn Award - upon three deserving individuals who represent members of the University's faculty, staff, and alumni. The Littlejohn Awards are presented each year on both campuses in recognition of service and commitment to Midwestern University.

The 2019 Littlejohn Award recipients for the Downers Grove Campus are alumnus Iqbal Atcha, RPh., a 1999 graduate of the Chicago College of Pharmacy (CCP); faculty member Michelle Swanson-Mungerson, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Microbiology and Immunology; and staff member Rebecca (Chapman) Caton, M.L.I.S., Director of Library.

Since graduating in 1999, Mr. Atcha has owned and operated a pharmacy technician training company, a business and clinical consulting company, a medical billing company, a public speaking company, and several independent pharmacies. Currently, he serves as the Senior Manager of Talent Acquisition for the Health and Wellness Division at Walmart.  He is an experienced author, consultant, and leader with over 15 years of proven success in healthcare recruiting. Mr. Atcha is a dedicated mentor to students in the pharmacy program at Midwestern University and has served on the CCP Dean's Advisory Council and CCP Alumni Council.

Dr. Swanson-Mungerson joined the faculty in 2008 in the Microbiology and Immunology Department, was promoted to associate professor with tenure in 2013, and currently serves as President of the Faculty Senate. Her research focuses on Epstein-Barr Virus latency and disease and her findings have been published in several peer-reviewed scientific journals. Dr. Swanson-Mungerson earned a doctorate (Ph.D.) in Immunology from the Loyola University of Chicago, Stritch School of Medicine in 2002 and a bachelor of science (B.S.) degree in Biology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1995.

Ms. Caton joined the library staff on the Downers Grove Campus in 2004. Currently, she oversees the libraries on both the Downers Grove, Illinois and Glendale, Arizona campuses of Midwestern University as the Director of Library. In her role, she manages the library staff and helps the University faculty and staff procure the information, tools, and literature instruction assistance they need to conduct research and educate students. In addition, she assures the libraries meet student needs by providing guidance and assistance within and outside classroom settings. Ms. Caton earned a Master of Library and Information Science (M.L.I.S.) degree from Dominican University and a bachelor of science (B.S.) degree from Southern Illinois University.

The Littlejohn Awards are named after three brothers - John Martin, James Buchanan, and David Littlejohn -  who, in 1900, established the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, Midwestern University's founding college. The awards have been presented annually since 2000 by Kathleen H. Goeppinger, Ph.D., President and Chief Executive Officer of Midwestern University. New inductees into the Littlejohn Society are honored at the annual faculty and staff recognition dinner and are selected for their outstanding service to the community, the health professions, and the University.
