RESEARCH SUMMARY

Although the genome of a variety of Staphylococcus aureus strains have been sequenced and genes identified, the regulation and the interactions of many of these genes and gene products remain unresolved. One of these genes is a cold shock protein, cspA (SA1234), recently renamed msaB, modulator of sarA and a component of the proposed operon, msaABCR (Sahukhal and Elasri 2014).  My work with this gene cspA has revealed apparent links to either direct or indirect regulation of the phenotypic characteristics of pigmentation, susceptibility to the antimicrobial peptide CG117-136, and biofilm production.
